Krokodil (pronounced crocodile), thought to have originated in Russia about 10 years ago, is not new to the drug seen but it is definitely worth talking about. A quick google search, will immediately reveal the horrific physical effects this drug has on those foolish enough to use it. Krokodil is a home-made poisonous concoction containing desomorphine – a synthetic morphine analog with 10 times the potency. Krokodil also frequently contains codeine, gasoline, red phosphorous, hydrochloric acid, iodine and paint thinner. It is these caustic additives that cause the destructive soft-tissue effects which often initially present as greenish, grey or black scaly crocodile-like skin, with necrotic sores due to vascular damage, thrombosis and gangrene. Krokodil use has been spreading from Russia through Europe with a reported survival rate among users of 2-3 years. As of September 2013, there were two possible reported cases in Arizona.
